Indicative criteria for music therapy

The starting point of music therapy is that the presence of the symptoms of a disorder becomes perceptible in the patient's actions in playing en singing and that these actions and the associated experiences can be influenced.

Within GGZ Standards, music therapy is mentioned as a possible form of treatment for, among others, depressive disorders, anxiety complaints and personality disorders.

 

Problems around emotional perception and expression

  • Limited possibility to experience and feelings

  • Limited expressibility

  • Lack of stress- and emotion regulation

  • Compulsiveness

  • Mood problems

  • Trauma related problems

  • Grieving

 

Relational issues

  • Over-adaptation to the other

  • Difficulty taking up space

  • Problems with setting boundaries

  • Problemen met het toelaten v’ contact

  • Egocentricity and lack of empathy

 

Early personality disorders

  • On a preverbal level working on the contact with inner feelings

  • Learning to mentalize

  • Experiencing cherishment

  • Improvement of self-care

 

Separation and individuation problems

  • Lack of autonomy

  • Inadequate identity development

 

Excessive rationalisation

  • Thinking and talking serves to avoid

  • Inadequate connection between thinking, feeling and acting

 

Psychosomatic complaints

  • Lack of contact with body signals and emotions

  • Poor handling of one's own boundaries

  • Difficult to ask for help

  • Unfinished greiving processes

  • Not yet words for experiences and feelings
